Role of axonal microRNAs in brain wiring and prenatal alcohol-induced rewiring

A key step in the development of neuronal networks is the appropriate guidance of neuronal axons to their targets. Recently, subsets of microRNAs specifically located in the axon have been identified. My research focuses on understanding whether axonal microRNAs are involved in axon guidance and in pathological rewiring of the brain. To answer these questions, I will focus on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders where many microRNAs are deregulated. Preliminary data obtained using a newly developed mouse model revealed that prenatal alcohol exposure leads to various axon guidance defects in the brain. In addition, we identified microRNA candidates, deregulated by prenatal alcohol exposure, that might be responsible for these defects.
