On Tuesday 19 November 2024, Stéphane Bugeon was honoured by the Bettencourt-Schueller Foundation for his innovative work on the brain’s adaptation to changes in state, such as the transition from alertness to sleep.

Head of the ‘Neuronal Circuits and Sensory Coding’ team, Stéphane Bugeon is exploring the role of inhibitory interneurons, key cells in the cerebral cortex.
These cells adjust neuronal activity according to internal and external stimuli, playing a central role in sensory perception and the brain’s adaptive response. By combining advanced neuronal imaging technologies and genetic tools, his research is shedding light on fundamental mechanisms that could transform our understanding of states of consciousness and sensory disorders.
By joining the prestigious Impulscience® programme, Stéphane Bugeon is benefiting from exceptional support to pursue his work: support over five years, together with funding of €2.3 million to invest in cutting-edge equipment, recruit talent and develop ambitious research projects.
